Robotics and Inclusive Education: Bridging Learning Gaps Using Assistive Robots to Support Students with Disabilities or Special Needs

Author : Dr. K Sudhakar

Abstract :

The integration of robotics in inclusive education has emerged as a transformative approach to addressing the diverse needs of students with disabilities or special needs. Assistive robots, designed to support cognitive, emotional, and social development, have shown significant promise in enhancing accessibility, personalization, and learner engagement in educational settings. This paper explores the evolving role of robotics as a tool for bridging learning gaps in inclusive classrooms by examining current technologies, implementation strategies, and real-world case studies. It highlights the capacity of robots to support learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), physical impairments, and communication difficulties through features such as adaptive feedback, gesture recognition, and interactive teaching modes. While the pedagogical benefits are notable, this study also critically analyzes the multifaceted challenges associated with robotics integration. Key issues include high procurement and maintenance costs, lack of teacher training, ethical concerns surrounding data privacy and surveillance, and the risk of over-reliance on technology in place of human interaction. The paper further discusses how disparities in access may reinforce existing educational inequalities, particularly in under-resourced settings. The conclusion advocates for a balanced, ethically grounded approach that leverages robotics to enhance—not replace—human-centered teaching and inclusive educational values. Through a comprehensive review of literature and practice, this paper underscores the transformative potential of assistive robotics in realizing the goals of inclusive education. It calls for deliberate, research-informed strategies that prioritize student agency, teacher readiness, and technological accessibility to ensure meaningful learning experiences for all.
