Abstract :
Mental health is one of the important matters of dialogues and interventions worldwide, with increasing rates of anxiety, depression, stress and psychosocial problems affecting individuals across all age groups. In India, the burden of mental illness is particularly severe in rural and low-resource settings due to poverty, limited healthcare infrastructure, shortage of trained mental health professionals and widespread social stigma. In this context, community-based mental health interventions have emerged as an effective and sustainable approach for addressing the treatment gap and improving mental wellbeing among vulnerable populations. The present study examines social work approaches to community-based mental health care in rural Indian settings. The major objectives of the study are to analyze the effectiveness of community-based mental health interventions, identify barriers in accessing mental health services, examine the role of community participation and task-sharing and explore the needs of vulnerable and marginalized groups. The study adopts a descriptive research design based on secondary data. Information has been collected from research articles, journals, books, government reports, policy documents and online databases related to mental health interventions in rural India. The findings of the study reveal that community-based interventions significantly contribute to improving emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, resilience, coping mechanisms and social connectedness among children, youth and older adults. Programmes such as school-based counselling, peer support groups, life skills education, tele-mental health services, yoga, mindfulness practices and community engagement activities have shown positive outcomes in reducing anxiety, depression and social isolation. It is suggest that strengthening social work practices and community-driven strategies can help build an equitable, accessible and sustainable mental healthcare system that promotes wellbeing, social inclusion and resilience among rural populations. The study concludes that community-based mental health interventions represent a practical, inclusive and cost-effective approach for addressing mental health challenges in rural India.
